During the flooding following Tropical Storm Hermine in early September, 2010, Travis County STAR Flight deployed its three hoist-equipped EC-145 Public Safety Helicopters after receiving over 20 requests for search and rescue assistance throughout Central Texas. Thirteen individuals were rescued, including a man clinging to the roof of his submerged vehicle in extremely swift-moving water, three ground-based swift water boat team members whose rescue boat became stranded amongst trees in swift water, a family of four stranded on the second-story of their home, a man stranded on high ground surrounded by flood water, and four individuals trapped in their homes. All were hoisted to the aircraft with an extraction collar by a Helicopter Rescue Specialist (HRS), over half during the hours of darkness using night vision goggles.

Travis County STAR Flight Swiftwater Rescue Team: Glenn Anderson, Lynn Burttschell, Willy Culberson, Bill Derrick, Kristin McLain, Casey Ping, Chuck Spangler, Mike J. Summers, Kenneth M. Thompson

STAR Flight Implements New Medical Equipment

STAR Flight crews have completed training with the GE Vscan ultrasound machine and have them available on every transport. Extended FAST exams can now be completed with this technology that literally fits in the palm of the provider's hand. Previously STAR Flight crews kept a much larger Sonosite machine on board the aircraft for the same purpose.

STAR Flight is saying goodbye to the IVAC triple channel infusion pumps that are no longer being supported by the manufacturer. The portable size and convenience of the IVAC pump will be missed, however STAR Flight has found a suitable replacement; the Braun Infusemat Space infusion pumps. Identical to their hospital counterparts, the Braun pumps have the latest technology and drug library. The pumps are single channel, so three are necessary to replace the functionality of the IVAC. Their larger footprint has been accomodated thanks to the spacious interior of STAR Flight's EC-145 aircraft.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Firefighters used a combined air and ground attack to control a fire in the Barton Creek Greenbelt

Fire crews set up in the Westlake Heights subdivision off Highway 360. While ground teams worked in the sometimes dense brush of the greenbelt, a STAR Flight helicopter dumped buckets of water in support.

Some neighbors said it was the worst fire they've seen in decades.

Crews managed to contain the fire to a half acre in a little more than an hour. Crews remained in place putting down hot spots until a little after 4 p.m.

No word yet on what sparked the fire.

On August 8 at approximately 2300 STAR Flight 1 was requested by North Hays County Fire & Rescue and San Marcos EMS to assist with the rescue of a 30 y/o Male patient who had fallen approximately 30 feet down a cliff. The victim was unconscious and in critical condition. North Hays County Fire & Rescue personnel had rappelled to the victim and begun treatment and packaging the patient for extrication. On scene command elected to have STAR Flight hoist the victim out because of patient condition and difficult terrain. STAR Flight inserted a rescuer and extricated the patient via the hoist aided by night vision goggles. The rescue effort was complicated by steep terrain, overhanging canopy and darkness. The patient was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin with potential life threatening injuries.

SF1 assisting ground units with adult male that fell 50-60 feet down steep embankment and became trapped between tractor and the ground. Units on the ground advise that due to steep terrain in the area that insertion of ALS rescue persons and extrication of patient will be safest and easiest by hoist. SF1 conducted brief and inserted rescuer to gegin patient care. IC indictaes that theycan get the extrication litter to the patients side easier by walking it than by having us lower the device. SF1 landed and passed the litter to ground units who carried it to patients side. SF1 delivered empty hook to rescuer and patient and hoisted them out of ravine. Crew Chief elected to leave them 7m below aircraft due to short flight to LZ. Patient set on the ground without incident and loaded in aircraft for transport.

STAR Flight was called in Austin to the scene of a 19 year old male who had jumped from a cliff into what turned out to be shallow water. A STAR Flight rescuer was inserted on the river bed alongside the cliff using the cable hoist. Ground EMS on scene had assessed the young man and found him to have back pain, and had immobilized him on a long spine board. The victim was secured into a Baughman bag and both victim and rescuer were then extracted from the river bed again using the hoist. The STAR Flight helicopter flew the victim over the cliffs to a field nearby and landed. The victim was then loaded into the helicopter and transported to Brackenridge hospital.
